"Are You washing my feet?"

In preparing for my Sunday School lesson, I was reading John 13, the account of Jesus washing His disciples' feet.

Jesus...rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.  After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.  Then He came to Simon Peter.  And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?"  ["Wait, Lord, are You sure You really know what You're doing?  You aren't actually going to wash my feet, are You?"]

Jesus' reply: "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this."

Peter responds forcefully: "You shall never wash my feet!"  ["Uh-uh.  No way, Lord!!"]

Can you believe it?!  I'd be happy to condemn Peter's audacity except for one thing: I'm often like that.  Questioning God.  Doubting His ways.  Trying to convince myself that I know better than He does.  And yet He patiently reminds me over and over again, "What I'm doing you not understand now, but you will someday.  Just trust Me!"

Lord, I believe...help my unbelief.
